The Stavanger region is a part of Fjord Norway. Here you will find stunning scenery flowing waterfalls, deep blue fjords and snow-capped mountains
Lysefjord is the closest fjord to Europe
The Lysefjord is located in close proximity to Stavanger. Our region has many scenic attractions, among them the Lysefjord and the Pulpit Rock. The Pulpit Rock is located 604 metres above sea level and is the most visited attraction in the region. Lonely Planet named it the number one most breathtaking viewing platform in the world. The Fjords of Norway are declared to be the finest, most unspoiled travel destinations in the world, and we believe Lysefjorden is the most beautiful of them all.
The gymnastic Thomas Peter Randulff discovered Preikestolen while travelling in the Lysefjord with a steamboat. The captain of the boat pointed at the special rock formation high above the fjord, and said “this looks just like a pulpit (preikestol)!”. In this moment the goal for the gymnastic and athletic Randulff was set:He wanted to get to the top of this mountain. his was the start of the tourist traffic to Preikestolen. The Stavanger Trekking Association built the Preikestolen lodge in 1949 so that tourists would have easier access to the area. In 1961, the road up to the lodge was built.
Altough most visitor hike to Preikestolen (The Pulpit rock), seen from the Lysefjord is also a wonderful experience. Although you don’t get to experience the view from the Pulpit Rock itself, you will experience the majestic fjord and see the Pulpit Rock 604 meters above you. Usually a tour will take 3 hours in total – please see our tour section for details.
The Lysefjord is carved out and shaped by glaciers during the ice ages.In this wild and brutal mountain people have scratched onto the hills and mountains for thousands of years.
Lysebotn, at the very end of Lysefjorden , is a popular base for a range of activities that will make your heart jump – if not base jump…! In this area you will also find the spectacular Kjerag bolt.

Tom Cruise, Mission Impossible and The Pulpit Rock
Mission Impossible 6 location shoots took place on Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) in november 2017. The popular mountain plateau was closed to the public several days to facilitate the filming of Mission Impossible 6, starring Hollywood actor Tom Cruise. Film-makers took over the extraordinary granite rock formation in Lysefjord for three days, and access was also restricted during the previous week while crews prepared the area for filming.
